Few plays have incited as many adaptations and musical reinterpretations as Maurice Maeterlinck's symbolist drama Pelléas and Mélisande or William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Just two years after the creation of Debussy's opera, Sibelius wrote his own incidental music to the play Pelléas and Mélisande, upon the request of the Swedish Theatre of Helsinki.
