How do you turn a classic of Anglo-Saxon children's literature into a choreographic object that is both universal and completely original? The answer is this dreamlike ballet, created in 2021 by the Taiwanese company B. Dance and its inspired choreographer Po-Cheng Tsaï, in collaboration with the Tanz Lucerner Theater. Dance and its inspired choreographer Po-Cheng Tsaï, with the Tanz Lucerner Theater directed by Kathleen McNurney. To a new age score by sound designer Rockid Lee, classical ballet, contemporary movement, hip-hop and jazz are combined with tai chi, martial arts, kung fu and even Chinese folk dance. The scenography is a journey in itself, with a labyrinth of mirrors, calligraphy in black ink and psychedelic video projections by Po-Chih Chang. The costumes are particularly sumptuous and contribute to the enchantment, and like the heroine, the spectator goes from surprise to surprise in this universe bathed in changing lights, which resembles nothing he has ever seen before. In addition to their impeccable technical mastery, the dancers add an element of mystery that makes the choreography, written to the letter, a true exploration of the human soul. Both theatrical and visual, psychological and very physical, ALICE is a success and a fascinating discovery, not to be missed!
