Pictures at an Exhibition (1874) - Orchestration by Maurice Ravel (1922)

At the request of Gidon Kremer, the Georgian Giya Kancheli composed A little Daneliade, an adaptation of the soundtrack he had composed for Kin-dza-dza! (1986), a satirical film with an offbeat sense of humour that has become a cult in Russia. Although it was not conceived for the big screen, Philip Glass' Violin Concerto was chosen as the sole music to illustrate Emmanuel Carrère's feature film La Moustache. The repetition and stubbornness of this score are a perfect accompaniment to the protagonist's confusion and gradual slide into madness.

Mussorgsky's colourful Pictures at an Exhibition have such evocative power that it becomes possible to imagine the works described by this expressive music.
