Sainte-Marguerite Island at the time of the conquest of Algeria, 1841-1884.

At the height of the French conquest of Algeria, several thousand men, women and children from various regions of the Maghreb were exiled without trial to Sainte-Marguerite Island. Imprisoned in Fort Royal, 274 of them died of disease or grief. They are buried today in the Muslim cemetery on Sainte-Marguerite Island. Discover their story.
